According to an expose in the Indian Express newspaper, in some southern Indian schools, students are required to wear wristbands of different colors to indicate the caste they belong. This practice is illegal under India’s Scheduled Castes act.
In fact the Indian government has ordered to investigate to officials in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district.
The practice, emerged in the 1990s, is used by student gangs to target victims on the basis of caste. Indeed, this custom results enforced by powerful community leaders rather than the schools themselves.
Local officials have asked the state’s education department to ban the wristbands, but no written order has been issued yet.
